Tony Lewis

Academy faculty - performance health

Tony Lewis has been involved in the fitness industry since 2002, however health and fitness has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. He has always been involved in sport and entered the health and fitness industry after highly successful professional dance career.

After studying full-time at the Australian Ballet School, Tony began his 15 years as a dance professional with The Australian Ballet Company and subsequently continued performing with ballet companies in Germany and Switzerland. He was then invited to return to Australia where he retired in 2003 as Principal Dancer of the Queensland Ballet.

After experiencing a career where refined physical maintenance and injury rehabilitation was perpetual, a career move to health and fitness was a natural and exciting transition. He then proceeded to acquire his qualifications and spent 5 years working in health clubs. During this time, Tony set about making plans for his own health and fitness business, TONY LEWIS STRENGTH & CONDITIONING.

By drawing on his past and utilising traditional and modern Strength and Conditioning techniques, Tony has developed a unique style of training. His focus is on creating lean, strong and agile bodies. It is this approach that initially attracted professional contemporary dancers from “Australasian Dance Collective” (formerly “Expressions Dance Company”) to work with him.

In 2014 he was invited to be the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Queensland Ballet Academy. His work with the male students of the Academy led to him being offered and accepting a position with Queensland Ballet’s Health Team. His role within the team has given him the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Together they assist in maintaining the health and wellbeing of the male and female company dancers.

His aim is to empower the dancers with knowledge and information that will positively impact on their careers and their quality of life after dance.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we work and perform. Long before we performed on this land, it played host to the dance expression of our First Peoples. We pay our respects to their Elders — past, present and emerging — and acknowledge the valuable contribution they have made and continue to make to the cultural landscape of this country.
